Sri Venkateswara swami, Srinivasa, Balaji |
Mythlogically, following are two stories that explain Lord Srinivasa’s presence.

As per Brahmapurana the story goes thus. Once Ādi Sēsha and Vāyu entered into a serious dispute about their strengths. To prove superiority, they took upon a challenge wherein the mountain Mēru was chosen the object. Sēsha had to protect it from the might of Vāyu. Thus Sēsha tightly wound himself around Mēru and Vāyu tried his best to blow it away but could not.

Ultimately Sēsha opened his mouth to breathe and Vāyu entered his body and blew a part of it. After the piece got blown to a long distance, Mēru interfered and requested Vāyu to leave it there and latter did so. Ashamed of his defeat, Sēsha did penance meditating upon Lord Vishnu. Vishnu, appeased, appeared before him to grant a boon of his desire. Sēsha assuming the shape of a hill requested the Lord to stay on his head and wanted the hill to be known as Sēshachala.

Following is another and most popular story from Bhavishyottara purāna.

At the advent of Kaliyuga, for the purpose of mankind’s uplift, all the Rishis (Sages) assembled to perform a magnificent Yajňya (Yagnya). When inquired by the heavenly sage Nāradā as to who they intended to please by performing the Yajňya, they were nonplussed and requested Sage Brighu, the one with an eye in the foot, to help them choose one.

At their request the Sage set forth upon a journey to test and choose the best from Trinity. First he went to Brahmalōka to test Lord Brahma. Sage Brighu found Lord Brahma fully immersed in his activities of creation, chanting of vēdās and enjoying the eternal music played by his consort Goddess Saraswati. The Sage felt offended by non acknowledgement of his visit and determined Lord Brahma to be unfit to be the recipient of Yajňya’s sacrifice.

The next stop was Kailāsa the heavenly abode of Lord Siva. He found him fully absorbed in sporting with his consort Goddess Pārvati. Determining Lord Siva also to be unfit, he headed towards Sri Vaikuntam. In Vaikuntam too his experience was no different. With Lord Vishnu in deep meditation and his consort Goddess Lakshmi completely engrossed in serving her Lord, his arrival here too went unnoticed. Disgusted, the Sage went to Lord Vishnu and kicked the Kausthubha or chest where his Consort resides. Rudely awakened, the Lord instead of castigating the Sage inquired whether it hurt kicking his chest decorated with so many ornaments. The Lord went to the extent of caressing the foot with which he was kicked. However, he silently annihilated the eye and pride of the Sage. Awakened and realizing the heinous crime he committed, the Sage profusely apologized and sought abhaya or pardon. Pardoned, the Sage requested the Lord to preside upon the Yajňya and to protect Kaliyuga to which the Lord agreed and sent him back. However his consort Lakshmi was deeply pained by the total episode and the manner in which the Lord treated the offender instead of admonishing him. Feeling deeply insulted, she left Vaikunta to perform penance and spend time in solitude at Karavirapura or Kolhapur. Unable to bear solitude and separation, Lord Vishnu too abandoned Vaikunta and wandered about. In course of time, the Lord reached Sēshachala. As per the promise he made to the Sages, he settled there as Lord Venkateswara.
